610 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
1. Year One
Location: Dr. Duke's Office
Timeline: Friday August 28, 1992
Dr. Duke looked over Mixon's file once more to refresh his memory, before calling the man into his office. He had just finished his second meeting that morning and was ready for the next. They had been going quite well so far. With a deep breath he opened his office door and spoke in that clinical no nonsense tone that doctors are notorious for, "Mr. Mixon please."
Eric had moved into his room and was in the waiting room to talk to the boss. It was a sparse waiting room, but he had seen worse. He looked up when the door opened. "That's me," he said as he arose and headed for the doorway.
"Come on and have a seat, Mr. Mixon," Dr. Duke said as he reentered his office and took his seat behind his desk. "I'm Dr. Duke, thank you for coming out here today, I'm sure you're aware already, but we are looking at making you the PE coach for our facility."
"Yes, that is what Ms Rebecca said." He said as he made his way into the seat. "I appreciate the invite to come here. I was a bit cautious just to the nature of how you were able to track me down. As you may know I have been AWOL from the military for the last year and staying hidden in my condition is.... challenging. " Eric explained.
"I'll be honest you with you Mr. Mixon, I don't have any direct contacts in the military or prior military circles, as much as I wish I did, I just haven't been able to build that network. The majority of my contacts are throughout the medical community, DHR, and Child Welfare. You most likely received my invitation from a friend of friend who understood our objective here. Did Rebecca explain to you what your role here would entail?" Dr. Duke asked.
"Vaguely, she said teach PE and self defense classes and be a mentor for the youth." He started to open up to the good doctor.
"That's correct, we want these kids to be in good physical condition, in case something happens they are fit enough to run, or take cover as needed. Mr. Shtorm will be training evasion and survival tactics. I do hope this is an over abundance of caution but I believe in preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. There will be mentoring involved as well. I hope this doesn't scare off," Drake said as leaned back in his chair and folded his fingers.
"Someone needs to be there for them. I wish someone had been there for me. Maybe then I would have stayed off the military and government radar." He said with a sadness. "I appreciate you giving me a chance."
"Your welcome, I look forward to working and training with you as well. There's a nice running trail outside through some woods and along a pecan Grove, I could always use a running partner," Drake said suggestively.
"May want to try Rebecca, I weigh almost five hundred pounds." He paused with a smirk. "I only run when I have to. Now you want to hit the gum and lift, I got you."
"I may take you up on that, if there's nothing else, think about what you will you need. I think we're going to make a supply run into town tomorrow. In the meantime, go grab some lunch, and we will meet upstairs shortly," the Doctor
explained.
Eric was much more at ease now. He stood and offered his hand. "I will, thank you Doc." He said as he headed back to check out more of the property.
