Meeting the Coach

1,053 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: 1. Year One
Location: Ridgehaven Manor - Foyer and Parlor
Timeline: Friday August 28, 1992

Rebecca had set up a folding table in the foyer to house her folder pile and paperwork. While the Doc was busy setting up the fundamentals and the back office, she took it upon herself to meet and greet the new additions to the facility. Eventually she'd probably be there to meet and greet the students and parents, but at the moment, meeting the new additions meant the other teachers and faculty.

Between the two of them, Rebecca felt that she was less imposing than someone in a lab coat. She didn't mind, honestly. She took a look at the stack of folders waiting for her, and checked her watch. The folder she had next to consider had the name Eric on it, and that folder had nothing else in it aside from a piece of paper with his name and a picture of what to expect.

Eric had a hard time making his way down to Rudgehaven. He still didn't trust the invite so he was very careful. Most didn't trust a very large obvious mutant. He walked and hitchhiked when he could get someone to stop with a vehicle big enough for him to fit. Even then when asked where he was going he just shot for a town nearby. Now that he had made it he was on foot the last few miles with his rutsack on his back. Being an unregistered mutant and awol from the military made life very difficult.

He walked up the long drive and found himself in front of the old plantations front door. It was time to see if this was a trap or a legit fresh start. He stepped through the doorway and saw a much smaller attractive young lady at a table full of folders. "Excuse me, is this Ridgehaven?"

Rebecca was there to open the door and greet the newcomer, recognizing him from the supplied photo. Sweet Lord he was tall. Rebecca was sorta, kinda, ish used to seeing people tower over her, but this was just... just an oddity. This gentleman was T A L L...

"Oh, umm, sorry about that. Hello and welcome to Ridgehaven. My name's Rebecca McMillen, and it's very nice to meet you." she offered a hand in greeting,

"Are you Mr. Mixon?" the mousey blonde asked, as though anyone else on earth could match the description.

Eric had not noticed the blonde at first but after she spoke he looked down. "I am." He said as he gently took the small handshake. "It is a pleasure to meet you. Are you the Headmistress of the Manor?"

Rebecca shook her head, a gentle giggle at his question. "Oh, no no. Doctor Drake is the headmaster. I'm one of the faculty here, but I'm also something of his assistant. In that I was the first one to make it to the manor." she giggled again, "So, took one for the team." she sounded upbeat about the promotion. "The Doctor is working on some organizing and streamlining for the background, and I figured I would be here to meet and greet the faculty as they come in."

"You know, cheerful greetings to make people feel a little more comfortable. So, that being said, would you like some coffee?" she offered, "And I suppose for the meet and greet, if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to ask. I'm here to help."

"Coffee would be nice." He said as he started to let his guard down. "As for concerns, I have many. I apologize ahead of time as I am very cautious. As an unregistered mutant that can not just blend in I never know what's a real offer and what is a trap." He said pacing infront of the table. "You being here helps a lot, just so you know."

"Coffee in the kitchen, right this way." she took the lead, this five eight was leading this seeming ten foot tall carbon golem into the kitchen. Rebecca relaxed, not wanting to show any form of aggression (ha ha) in this scenario. She was here to help him adjust and feel well. In this, she relaxed herself, and her thin tail showed itself. Coiled up around her waist to hide, her posture instantly slid to casual, and her calm tail showed that.

Thin and slightly fuzzy, like a mouse tail rather than any other kind of animal tail. She might not have even realized it had unfurled and was swaying. "Second door up there." she remarked, heading in to a coffee and tea stations. "How do you take it?" she asked, getting a mug out.... then she put it back and got him a much, much larger mug.

"This one's one of the Doctor's mugs, but I don't think I'd feel right giving you, what, a shot glass of coffee?"

"I take it black and usually just drink from the carafe, but the mug will work." He said with a grin starting to form. "So my invite said that I would be teaching young mutants. Any idea what I am teaching?" He was starting to settle down more and more.

"Feel free to refill the mug as you want. When I saw the picture and it said seven foot something I swear I thought it was a typo. So yeah, full pot, help yourself." she made sure to pour herself a mug first, then motioned to the carafe. "She's all yours. As for what you're curriculum is planned, the list said you'd be helping the kids learn art."

She paused, then smiled, then giggled. "I'm teasing, kidding kidding." she giggled again. "Physical Education. Gym, track, fitness, that sort of curriculum. Sound like something you can handle?"

He laughed at this petite lady with so much sass. So many are just so intimidated by him. "That would be easy to handle. I am intrigued by the concept of a safe place for the gifted." He sad as he drank some coffee. I hope that the Doctor is truly about helping and not weaponizing our kind for his benefit."

"You and me both." she admitted. "Well..." she raised up her mug, "To safety."

"To safety" He said with a grin as he raised his carafe. Maybe this will be what he dreamed it would be. Time will tell.
